Corporate social responsibility imitation in ukraine: analysis of the problem and strategies to overcome
Abstract
Introduction. The paper exploits relevant statistics and a variety of expert data to show the depth of deformation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Ukraine. The paper suggests that business cannot justify the absence or underdevelopment of CSR by an appeal to awkward public management and regulatory deficiency of government in Ukraine. CSR area is much more the area of business responsibility, than Ukrainian corporations consider it to be. Poor government regulations in CSR area also result from the lack of consolidated and meaningful CSR policy of business. The paper offers a toolkit for business to implement change in CSR reality in Ukraine.
Purpose. The paper analyses the progress in labor practices, social accountability and corporate citizenship in Ukraine as the main areas of CSR policy and puts forward the strategic tools meant for business community to be able to cope effectively with the urging hardships in the CSR area.
Results. The paper reveals outrageous defects in CSR policy of Ukrainian business, resulting in actual simulation of CSR in the country. The analysis of labor practices, social accountability efforts and anticorruption policies of business are presented in the paper. The article shows the depth of deformation CSR policies in Ukraine in comparison with the foreign examples. It manifests the unprecedented crisis in corporate labor practices, bankruptcy of social accountability and anticorruption activities. In order to improve the situation business must evolve from simulation of CSR to self-restraint and self-organization in CSR area. The main tools for this are the ethical codes and standards of CSR, induced in business sectors by network of self-regulatory organizations, and CSR-related business education, being organized and developed by corporations.
