The current state of the stock market in Ukraine is analysed in the article. The main peculiarities of its functioning and the prospects of its further developmentare defined. It has been established that the amount of public debt in Ukraine is insignificant in comparison with that of developed economies. Nevertheless, the rate of its growth seems precarious – at present the part of public debt and government-backed debt in GDP is over 40%. The author has found out that low activity of the government securities market as well as large amounts of deposits of citizens at banks indicate the investor’s potential and the necessity to employ their resources to finance government programmes. The structure and scope of the primary and secondary government securities market have been defined in value terms. It has been analysed the dynamics of government securities’ trade value on «PFTS» and «Perspektyva» stock exchanges. The author has studied the structure of security holdings in the aggregate portfolio of financial institutions. The carried out analysis of the gilt-edged market will make possible to forecast its further development and define peculiarities of its transformations in the future, which will be presented in further investigations.
