Problems, causes and socio-economic consequences of migration of ukrainians to Russia

Abstract

Introduction. In recent years the large-scale emigration of Ukrainians, including the Russian Federation, hasbeen observed because of rising tensions on the labor market within the country due to the deepening economic crisis and military conflict in the east.

Purpose of the research is to identify and disclose the causes and consequences of Ukrainian migration to Russia, which will improve migration policy in Ukraine and provide the strengthening of national competitiveness.

Method (methodology). The traditional general scientific methods, such as historical, formal-logical, comparative method of grouping and summarizing, and heuristic methods have been used in research.

Results. The main waves of Ukrainian emigration to Russia are identified and justified on the basis of analysis of contemporary economic history. Socio-economic motivation, poverty, unemployment, inability to realize themselves at home have become the common causes of the first and fourth waves of emigration. Political and military factors like war, repression, political persecution and others have become the causes of the second, third and fifth waves of migration. The main problems of modern Ukrainian emigration to Russia are the loss of scientific and technological potential of the country, the legal vulnerability of Ukrainian migrants, discrimination in terms of pay, child migration. The result of research is the development of the appropriate proposals for improvement of the state migration policy of Ukraine.
